    1. Matthew, the man, often depicted as a human figure, reflecting Christ’s humanity. Mark, he was the lion, associated with courage, with majesty, the majesty of Christ. Luke, Luke was the bull. He was very bullish in his understanding. He wasn’t like Peter at all. So, typically seen as the symbol of sacrifice, he represents Christ’s priestly role. And then there’s John, the eagle. He’s very different than the others, just like an eagle is very different than the other mammals that are depicted here. Man is a mammal, a lion is a mammal, a bull is a mammal, an eagle is an avian. John is very different. The Gospel of John is the Gnostic version of the Synoptic Gospels. It’s very different than Matthew, Mark, and Luke. John is the eagle symbolizing Christ’s humanity.
